How Climate Change Became a Religion for Young Atheists
The similarities between Biblical story of the Great Flood and the supposed consequences of global warming are uncannily similar
When Britain’s Met Office solemnly announced a fortnight ago that Britain had just experienced the warmest May ever and that this was part of the hottest spring since records began in 1884, the news was treated with incredulity and contempt by many older people. Not so for youngsters, who ignored the evidence of their senses and lapped up this latest supposed manifestation of global warming. This is, at first sight, puzzling. How can people believe so deeply in a strange and counter-intuitive idea, even to the extent of denying what is plainly clear to the rest of us? The answer is, that these mental gymnastics are par for the course when dealing with the adherents of a religion, who are able to avoid the demands of reason and logic. For many young people, this is what climate change has indeed become, a religious faith, rather than a rational and objective belief, founded upon evidence.
