It is sometimes thought that terrorism on the London Underground is a recent phenomenon
There is a popular and wholly mistaken belief that terrorism is somehow a modern scourge; one which has only emerged in the last 30 or 40 years. Nothing could be further from the truth. When the so-called 7/7 attacks were carried out on London Tube trains in 2005, it was widely assumed that nothing of the sort had ever before been seen in the capital. In fact, the first bomb attacks on commuters using the London Underground took place not in 2005, nor during the IRA campaign of the 1970s; but in the reign of Queen Victoria.
