If somebody had suggested eleven years ago the establishment of a centre where young people from dysfunctional families, many of them on the autistic spectrum or with mental health difficulties, should be rendered infertile by drugs or even have their testicles or wombs removed surgically, people would probably have raised their eyebrows. It sounds like the kind of ghastly thing which Nazi doctors might have got up to in a concentration camp. That the procedures being used were experimental, with nobody really knowing the outcomes, would make the similarity to the work of men like Dr Josef Mengele at Auschwitz all the more fitting.
