Many people have grave reservations about the large number of foreigners who are, by the waving of a civil servant’s magic wand, supposedly transformed into British citizens. This has all the appearance of a conjuring trick, for we know that it is only an illusion and that nothing is really changing. I doubt if even the Pakistanis, Afghans, Syrians and Nigerians who participate in this charade really believe that they have, in any real sense, been changed by the process. Still, we have to concede that it is possible to acquire a different nationality from that into which one was born. What is not possible of course, is to change one’s ethnicity. This is something inherited from parents, and it is fixed and immutable. I think that most of us realise this.
