The hypocrisy in the West about the wars in Gaza and Ukraine
The criticism of Russian and Israeli actions during the wars which they are fighting, illustrates clearly just how short are the memories of people in Britain and the United States.
As the nineteenth-century politician and historian Thomas Macaulay remarked almost two hundred years ago, “We know no spectacle so ridiculous as the British public in one of its periodical fits of morality.” We are currently being treated to the sight of such fits of morality concerning the wars in Gaza and Ukraine. What makes these displays even more entertaining, however, is that they are inextricably bound up with the most appalling hypocrisy. It is indeed a ridiculous spectacle.
