Public debate about illegal immigration, whether in Europe or North America often resembles the conversation at the Mad Hatter’s tea party in Alice in Wonderland; that is to say it has no bearing at all on the real world and is characterised by a distinct lack of either logic or reason. The governments of Britain and America constantly promise to take decisive action which will reduce or eliminate the problem at a stroke, and yet neither politicians nor the general public believe for a moment that any of the proposals being advanced will make the slightest difference to the situation. They are right to be sceptical, because not one of the ideas which are suggested could possibly work in practice. It need not be this way, of course, for there really would be no difficulty at all in dealing swiftly and effectively with the hordes from Asia, Africa and South America who wish to invade the industrialised, Western World.
