Whatever happened to Christian names in Britain?
Only a few years ago everybody had a Christian name and a surname. Now, the expression is no more than an historical curiosity
BBC programmes for schools have now abandoned the use of BC and AD in dates and replaced them instead with BCE and CE. As explained on their website, “Throughout we have used BCE ('Before Common Era') and CE ('Common Era') for dates. These terms are substitutes for BC and AD.” (1). No explanation is offered for this shift. On the surface, it appears bizarre because dates are still anchored to the supposed year in which Jesus was born; for example, 55 BC becomes 55 BCE. What then is the point of adding that letter ‘E’ after BC?
